Welcome to the website of the department of Social and Economic Geography in Sofia University   "St. Kliment Ohridski"

         

                  The history of the university geography in Bulgaria began with the creation of Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski". The beginning was through the efforts of Prof. Anastas Ishirkov who in 1898 sterts reading the first geography lectures in the Department of "Geography and General Ethnography". Later Biology-Geology-Geography Faculty was established, where he continued developing the university geography.

          The department of "Social and Economic Geography" was established in 1948 as since then explores the relationship between nature and society at global, regional and local level.

          In 1963 a Geology and Geography Faculty was founded, which over the years expanded its scientific directions. New departments were created and now there are nine in total.

        Scientific directions in which the members of department work are: Geodemographics and migration processes, Geography of settlements and urbanization processes, Ethno-political conflicts, Socio-economic geography of Bulgaria, Theoretical geography, Economic geography, Transport and economic relations, Agribusiness, Geography of rural areas and etc.

          The work of the department is focused on the latest world problems and trends related to Economic and Social Geography.
